1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
Looking Up Changes Everything
In 2018, Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City was praised as one of the world’s best playmakers. What made him so effective? His coach said it was his vision: “He always lifts his head. He sees options others don’t.” While many players keep their eyes down on the ball, De Bruyne scans the whole field, creating plays no one else could imagine. His ability to look up changed games.
Psalm 121 gives us a similar lesson for life. The psalmist says, “I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord.” In other words, when life gets heavy, don’t just stare at the problem in front of you — lift your eyes to God, the One who made heaven and earth.
Our True Source of Help
We live in a culture that tells us to push harder, grind more, and rely on ourselves. But Psalm 121 reminds us of a better truth: real strength doesn’t come from us — it comes from God. He doesn’t grow tired, doesn’t overlook us, and doesn’t walk away when we struggle. He is our constant helper.
Sports + Faith Connection
- In sports, lifting your head gives you vision and options.
- In faith, lifting your eyes to God gives you perspective and peace.
- Athletes need teammates to help; followers of Jesus need the Lord’s strength to endure.
Athlete Takeaway
This week, ask yourself: Where do I usually look for help first?
- Is it yourself, your friends, or God?
- Identify one area of your life where you’ve been trying to do it all alone.
- Choose one practical way to lift your eyes to Him — through prayer, Scripture, or worship.
Encouragement from Scripture
“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.” — Psalm 28:7
Prayer:
Lord, I confess that I often try to handle things on my own. Teach me to lift my eyes to You for strength and help. Give me vision when I feel stuck, courage when I feel afraid, and trust when I feel weak. Thank You for being my constant helper. Amen.
